References on a Resume

References on a Resume It is common knowledge that at some point in the job seeking process, you will likely need to list professional or personal references. While reference checks today are much different than they were years ago, they are still used when considering a potential employee. There are several things to consider regarding references on your resume. First, be sure to ask people if they are willing to be a reference for you. It is a huge mistake to list someone as a reference and never let them know. There is nothing worse than being “surprised” with a phone call asking if you can answer a few questions about so-and-so. Inform your references that you are seeking job opportunities and they may receive phone calls from potential employers. Secondly, consider carefully whom you will ask to be a reference. Depending upon the types of jobs you are seeking, you may need both personal and professional references. Professional references will vouch for your work history, job experience, and workplace conduct. Personal references should be those individuals you have known for a greater length of time. These references will be able to tell the employer about your character and your personality. Consider asking people who have known you for at least five years and have known you through various parts of your life. Next, do not put “References Available Upon Request” on your resume. This is understood in today’s industry. Instead, have a second sheet that lists your references on one page. Also, be sure to take your reference page with you when you fill out the job application. The job application typically asks for a list of your references, along with their contact information. Finally, keep your references up-to-date. People move, change jobs, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers. Be sure to keep in contact with your references and update any information as needed. References are typically checked towards the end of the hiring process; make sure your references are aware that you have listed them. And, ask only those individuals whom you trust and know will give you a glowing reference. These people can help shape the final opinions of the potential employer. Choose your references wisely and be sure they can help you land your dream job.
